WGN CHICAGO OF THE PAST

eddie hubbard jack brickhouse

My dad and his Texas Cowgirls were  recurrent interviewed  guests on the  WGN Chicago radio show with Eddie Hubbard and Jack Brickhouse . The Jack and Eddie Show sometimes live from the Isbell Supper Club hotels or games in the fifties.. Jack was the voice over for the Cubs and play by play man for the Bears along side Irv Kupicnet . Irv was a household name aroung our kitchen table a guy my dad could go to. Eddie was on in the am then the show with Jack in the afternoons evenings . Eddie  was host of The WGN  Barn Dance from 1960-1969 on Saturday nights. My dads relationship with Pee Wee King and other western musicians were his tie to that popular program ..

I MET BRUCE DERN THE DAY I STARTED SHAVING MY LEGS

ROAD STORIES

BRUCE DERN SHAVING MY LEGS

I am not one of those people who has ever been at a cross road. My roads have always crossed over. .
I was in my very early teens I'd have to look up the year another of those crossovers. My moms sisters boy died that yearIt was the same year the movie The Cowboys with John Wayne and Bruce Dern was being filmed. in their hometown..
My mom loaded six of the seven of us kids in the big cruiser , panelled staionwagon with the facing rear seat and aircon my dad bought for her to fit us all for our annual summer western tour. We hit every state west of the Missisippi River. My mom ran the Miss American state final pageants along the way and scouted Texas Cowgirl team member possibilites.
This years tour was routed to spend time in Pagosa Springs ,Colorado where my Aunt Maimie Ruth and Uncle Doug lived with their kids, at the base of Wolf Creek pass on the continenatl divide. . The Cowboys movie was on location for the summer being filmed there. This was not known by me until I was already in town.

On the road along the way my mom would plant the six of us in double feature movies in towns along the road while she went to view potential Texas Cowgirls showing her what they had. We were always at the pageants helping with choreography ,selling tickets and program books ,setting up ballrooms or running the interview times.Even at 10 or 13 we had some responsibility.. At four my brother Kirk knew how to find his way from a hotel pool to our room or get ice at the icemaker and back to saftey. My little sister Beth on the other hand consitantly asked if we were still in the United States with every hotel we landed in. We'd stay  in  hotels across every state from spring to summer, along the way.

The Hotels my dad and mom's pagents were in comped our room and room service usually the exclusive Presidentail Suite. Like the one in the Brown Palace in Denver with lit dressing rooms and white gloved servers standing by our room service table.
I had decided to stay longer in Pagosa with my sister Julie my brothers Todd, Scott . My mom took the littler two Beth Ann and Kirk Douglas on the road with her. to go on to California Nevada Oregon and Idaho. My mom would come back and get the rest of us for Washington ,Wyoming Montana ,Utah and the Dakotas.

I had just started shaving my legs . My mom told me not to "because stubble would not be pretty on my skinny athletic limbs banged up from horse riding and mini bike accidents". So I had a few weeks or hairy outgrowth and my cousin Bobby Forrest Lynch decided it was time to  give in  and share his shaving razor with me. He took me horse back riding, to his band jams and trout fishing. He was working as an assistant on the movie set he had the responsibility of giving John Wayne his favorite donuts he had flown in from his favorite bakery. The boys in the movie stayed in a little motel right across the street from my aunt and uncles house.

I had a feverish crush on local boy Eppifanio Trilljillo . He was 16 long black hair ,road a bycycle and the rumor had it robbed the grocery store for drugs. I'd follow him everywhere sun up to sun down. The carnival was in town, the 4th of July Rodeo and the movie set and Eppifanio .

The actor Bruce Dern ran every morning at at 7 a.m. . faithfully then showed up to shoot hoops with my two little brothers 10 and 9 waiting with basketball in hand at the outdoor court at the highschool. I'd tell Bruce Dern about our life and he'd say "would be a great movie your life, is hang onto it" . That was one of my crossovers I knew then at 12 or 13 I'd meet the right hollywood person when the years had filled more storyline and we had all lived more.

Summers were  magic visiting  22 states in 3 months

My dads pal Satchel Paige

satchel leroy paiges barnstorm promos

While he was in the Negro League and during barnstorming, the advertisements frequently read that either he struck out the first nine batters or the fans got their money back. Very rarely was any money returned.  Paige is often researched and written about  i.e. his lost years. I know where he was, barnstorming with my dad Dempsey Hovland on tours and eating with his family in our backyard bbq's.

Check out my new calendar!
40s- 70s beating all odds on talent and hustle in America making a mark that is historically unmatched. While public schools banned females from basketball to save them from damaging their female anatomy and organs my dad was recruiting young women to play on his barnstorming all women basketball team. Arkansas and Iowa were producing outstanding high school female basketball players. The World Famous Texas Cowgirls 1949-1977 was developed by my dad in Chicago while managing the North Park hotel in Lincoln Park . Doc Kearns Jack Dempseys manager was approached by my dad when he was a guest at the hotel and my dads dream team was originated. The women travelled on the road taking on male opponants sportcasters local leauges college and factoy teams. The girls opened for Syracuse Nationals Boston Celtics Minneapolis Lakers Philadelphia 76ers Chicago Bombers Harlem Globetrotters. Playing an average of 160 games a year in a season. Seven days a week twice on Sundays They played ball against Chicago Bears Cleveland Browns Green Bay Packers Rose Bowl Champs and Military base teams . A young Flo Holder from Gillam Arkansas left a college basketball scholarship behind to try out and join the team .She married Dempsey Hovland and continued to play into her thirties. There was no WNBA this was a team prettier than others travling and having a blast. . The team won an average of 70 to80 percent of games played. They were featured on CBS in the seventies before disbanning due to my dads health. See photos/ news articles of Texas Cowgirls with Bob Cousy George Mikan Dolph Shayes Wilt Chamberlain in my albums ALBUMS Dempsey Hovland shook a nickle and it turned into a dollar he booked nationl recording artists comedy acts and off the wall entertainers booking Harmonica Rascals Pee Wee King plate spinners and bears riding bycycles to feed his family of 9 and provide entertainment during halftime for his World Famous Texas Cowgirls. My dad Dempsey ran miss american teenager miss National Teenager Little Miss pagents to bring in income to keep The World Famous all female basketball barnstorming team on the road for almost 30 years. My garage was filled with converse shoes levis basketballs pa systems and gags that were used on the court to get the women through the doors of local gyms and the largest stadiums that hosted male pro ball players with barriers of sexist overtones in his way once those girls got to the jump shot the ball was in their court. Dropping their cowgirl hats holsters pistols boleras and vests as they enterered the court in a running circle that led to center court where the players intrigued crowds with their ball handling specialties spinning on fingertips bouncing balls down court with knees neck roles and more. Blindfold shootouts gunshots lassoing male opponants and hog tying were trademark gags of the team developed by my dad. Their showmanship and cowgirl theme seperate them from any other teams theme. They had sex appeal created by Hovland in the performance they put into the game.

Homage to Orange Blossom Special

The fiddle tune "Orange Blossom Special", about the passenger train of the same name, was written by Ervin T. Rouse (1917-1981) in 1938. The original recording was created by Ervin and Gordon Rouse in 1939. It is considered the best known fiddle tune of the twentieth century and is often called simply The Special. It has been referred to as "the fiddle player's national anthem".

By the 1950s, it had become a perennial favorite at bluegrass festivals, popular for its rousing energy. For a long time no fiddle player would be hired for a bluegrass band unless he could play it.

Orange Blossom Special was the official theme song (1949-1977) for the world famous Texas Cowgirls basketball team (owner sports promoter Dempsey Hovland). The Cowgirls barnstormed playing men's basketball rules against male opponents, winning 80% of their 160 or more games per season. The team decked with boleros, western hats, holsters and pistols over their basketball uniforms entered the courts to the tune of Orange Blossom Special. dropping an article of western fashion with each fancy layup, pregame ,setting the crowds on fire.

"For many years Orange Blossom Special has been not only a train imitation piece, but also a vehicle to exhibit the fiddler's pyrotechnic virtuosity. Performed at breakneck tempos and with imitative embellishments that evoke train wheels and whistles, OBS is guaranteed to bring the blood of all but the most jaded listeners to a quick, rolling boil."
